Hmm apparently i was naughty so my reply was eaten. Or this will become a double reply, for to answer you Griatch.
It's mostly Photoshop with some filters and Mystical Lighting for shadows and light

Aha, thanks for the summary. I don't use PS myself (using the free GIMP for all my work, where effects like this would be done a bit differently), but it sounds like you have the process down; some of those planets are quite striking.
